A fusion of classic blues and the up-tempo sounds of '60s soul, Soul Blues is a common, busy crossover ground for artists from both traditions. Starting with the standard blues band -- piano, guitar, bass, harmonica and percussion -- and sometimes adding an R&B horn section, Soul Blues artists stretch the conventional boundaries while keeping a firm grounding in soul. Etta James, Bobby "Blue" Bland and Johnnie Taylor all championed Soul Blues.
