King Cole struck gold with his much-copied jazz trio and his smoky, ethereal pop vocals. Cole's piano/guitar/bass trio format influenced scores of jazz artists from Oscar Peterson to Diana Krall. From his trailblazing jazz trio to his sublime pop vocals, Nat Cole earned the "King" moniker. While he could never transfer his relaxed, natural style to film, Cole starred in China Gate with Angie Dickinson. Cole, who died of lung cancer, used to smoke packs of cigarettes before a recording session to get his voice raw.
