John McLaughlin

Born January 4, 1942 in Yorkshire, England, John McLaughlin moved to New York in 1969, becoming one of the dominant guitar players of the 70's. Along the years he collaborated with artists such as Miles Davis ("In a Silent Way", "Bitches Brew"), Santana, Al DiMeola and the sax player Bill Evans. In 1971 he formed the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which combined a rock sound with the intricate harmonies and improvised style of jazz. In the mid 70's he switched to acoustic guitar and recorded world music with his group Shakti, becoming a household name.
